A well-fitting prosthesis can significantly enhance your quality of life, allowing you to regain independence and mobility. Proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure your prosthesis serves you well for years to come. At Pongratz, we want to help you maximize the benefits of your prosthetic device.
Here are some practical tips and guidelines to help you maintain your prosthesis for long-term functionality and use.
1. Cleanliness Is Key
Regular cleaning is crucial to prevent the buildup of dirt, sweat, and bacteria that can affect your prosthesis’s appearance and functionality.
Here’s what you can do:
- Daily Cleaning: Gently wipe down your prosthesis with a soft, damp cloth to remove any surface dirt and sweat. It is also important to clean your liner and/or sleeves daily. Turn the liner/sleeve inside out and use a mild unscented soap with water to wash it. Rinse the liner/sleeve under water to remove all the soap residue and either pat dry with a paper towel or hang to dry. Alternating your liner every day is a great way to ensure your liner stays dry and clean.
- Weekly Cleaning: Use a mild soap or a specialized prosthetic cleaning solution to give your device a more thorough cleaning. Be sure to rinse it well to remove any soap residue.
- Drying: After cleaning, allow your prosthesis to air dry completely before wearing it again. Moisture can lead to skin irritation and damage the components.
2. Protect Against Moisture
Excess moisture can lead to rust and corrosion, affecting the lifespan of your prosthesis.
Take these precautions:
- Waterproof Covers: These can be found on various websites if you have a need to submerge your prosthesis. The cover will allow you to participate in water-based activities without risking damage to your device. Talk to your prosthetist before submerging your prosthesis. Most prosthetic components are water-resistant.
- Rainy Days: If you are caught out in the rain while wearing your prosthesis, make sure to dry it off once you come in. Most prostheses are able to withstand weather conditions, but it is always a good idea to dry off the prosthesis to reduce the chance of metal components rusting.
3. Check for Wear and Tear
Make a note in your calendar to regularly inspect your prosthetic device and supplies for signs of wear and tear. Catching issues early can prevent more extensive damage.
Keep an eye out for:
- Joints and Connectors: Check for loose or worn-out joints, screws, or connectors. Ask your prosthetist to tighten or replace them as needed.
- Straps and Padding: Inspect straps, padding, and any soft components for fraying, tears, or signs of deterioration. Ask your prosthetist to replace these parts if necessary.
- Liners and Sleeves: Check for holes, tears, and fraying. These issues could lead to further problems down the line, such as wounds, skin irritation, and loss of suspension.
4. Maintain Proper Fit
A well-fitting prosthesis is essential for comfort and functionality. As your body changes over time, adjustments might be needed.
- Regular Check-Ups: Schedule regular appointments with your prosthetist to assess the fit and make necessary adjustments. An appointment every 6 months is recommended to maintain the prosthesis, make adjustments, and or order new supplies.
- Weight Changes: Significant weight changes can affect the fit of your prosthesis. Keep your prosthetist informed so they can modify the device accordingly.
- Atrophy: Over time, the residual limb will atrophy, or shrink, thus affecting the fit of the prosthesis. It is important to wear the correct amount of socks to maintain the fit of the socket. Reach out to your prosthetist for a follow-up visit if you are unsure about your sock ply.
5. Store Properly
Proper storage can prevent accidental damage when you’re not wearing your prosthesis:
- Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Store your prosthesis in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, as these conditions can degrade materials and components.
6. Follow Manufacturer Guidelines
Always adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations for care and maintenance. They know their product best and can provide specific instructions to maximize the life of your prosthesis.
