Patient-tailored orthotics can be uniquely crafted into braces, shoes, and insoles that meet the unique dimensions and needs of the particular individual. They typically provide arch support and other corrective or functional characteristics for the feet and ankles, restoring function and ability to perform actions and participate in activities that were readily accessible before limb loss.

Why do my insoles smell?
Odor is generally caused by excess bacteria. Your insoles could also smell due to moisture getting stuck in the footbed. The dampness left behind by water or sweat can create a breeding ground for mold.
The longer the bacteria sits and grows, the more scent it will create! It is best to get ahead of the odor as soon as you notice it.
How do you get the smell out of orthotics?
Cleaning your orthotics thoroughly will help reduce and eliminate foul scents. Follow these tips for proper hygiene and increased comfort:
- Back to the basics- use water and soap to gently scrub off excess dirt, sweat, or build-up. Rinse and dry after hand washing.
- Baking soda is the best deodorizer! Sprinkle the powder onto your orthotics directly or make a paste with water. Let it sit for a few hours overnight, brushing away excess baking soda when finished.
- Spray the insoles with equal parts water and white vinegar, or wipe the mixture with a cloth. This will eliminate odor and is a natural deodorizer.
- Spray rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria and eliminate odor.
- Replace your insoles.
After cleaning your insoles, allow them to dry fully before putting them back into your shoes or brace. Regular cleaning and maintenance will help keep odors at bay.
Can orthotic inserts be washed?
While your orthotics can be washed, it is best not to completely submerge them in water. Instead of washing your orthotics with other laundry in a washing machine, hand wash them with warm water, mild soap, and a damp cloth. Wiping the orthotics gently by hand will reduce the moisture left behind, minimizing odor and the possibility of mold growth.
Can you clean insoles with dish soap?
Combining mild detergents, soft soaps, or gentle dish soap with water is an easy and effective way to clean insoles. Scrub the insoles with your water-soap mixture to remove any excess dirt or sweat.
What happens if orthotics get wet?
Water can damage your orthotics in addition to odor and trapped moisture. Most orthotics are made of plastics or leather, so continual water exposure can put your custom orthotics at risk for damage. If your orthotics get wet or submerged in water, let them air dry completely. If any lifting of the material occurs, you can easily apply glue and hold pressure to flatten them to the proper condition.
How do you dry orthotics?
If your orthotics become wet, first pat them dry with a clean towel, soaking up as much moisture as possible. Then, allow them to air dry in an open, well-ventilated area. While drying, make sure that they are laid flat so they do not lose their shape!
How do you disinfect custom orthotics?
There are two effective ways to disinfect and clean your custom orthotics. First, clean them with a gentle soap and warm water solution. Second, submerge them in baking soda. The baking soda will not only clean the surface but also tackle stubborn stains and strong odors. Paired with white vinegar, the baking soda duo will be unstoppable!
How long do orthotics last?
Every person’s orthotics will last different time periods due to general wear and tear from daily use. The average time orthotics last before needing a replacement is about two to three years- but some patients can use theirs for up to five years. After a certain amount of time, your shoes and insoles will break down and lose shape.
