Prosthetic Knees for Sports

February 19, 2024

Limb loss is life-changing in many ways, including your participation in sports. But with the current state of prosthetic technology, there are prosthetics available for all sorts of sports, even some exclusively made for particular activities such as volleyball or long-distance running.

Lower-limb prosthetics for sports are also designed to weather different elements, including rain, snow, and sweat. They are also meant to take a beating, with some especially designed for frequent use during high impact sports.

Prosthetic Knees

Prosthetic knees restore lower-limb function and enhance mobility and athletic capabilities, allowing you to participate in a wide range of activities and sports. Here are some components/qualities to look for:

  • Running/Track and Field: Prosthesis designed for dynamic motion and shock absorption.
  • Cycling: Custom-fit prosthesis adaptable for pedal attachment and rapid knee flexion and extension without resistance.
  • Skiing/Snowboarding: Stability when standing with slightly flexed knees at angles.
  • Soccer/Basketball: Balance, support, and impact resistance in the prosthesis.
  • Weight Lifting/Gym Workouts: Prosthesis built for withstanding weight lifting stresses.
  • Golf: Prosthesis with enhanced walking balance and allows for torsion during the stroke or swing.
  • Martial Arts: Durable prostheses that allow for stance in knee flexion while also allowing the knee to flex and extend freely.
  • Dance/Gymnastics: Prosthetics that have high impact ratings, locking and unlocking capabilities.

The design of each prosthesis varies based on the particular activity or sport you’re planning to participate in. Some focus on strength and stability while others prioritize torsion. Technological advancements continue to open up new possibilities for amputees in the realm of sports and physical activities.
