Will Orthotics Help My Child?

August 27, 2024

As parents, ensuring our children’s health and well-being is always a top priority. When it comes to any part of their body, we want them to be as healthy as they can be. When it comes to any foot, ankle, or back conditions, it’s crucial to address any issues early on to prevent long-term problems. Children can experience various foot issues, including flat feet, high arches, and other deformities, which can cause significant discomfort.

Custom orthotics, such as shoe inserts and arch supports, are often recommended to ameliorate these problems. This article explores the benefits of orthotics for kids, how to determine if your child needs them, and other essential information.

Are orthotics worth it for kids?

Orthotics for kids can be incredibly beneficial, particularly for those experiencing food pain or other issues.

Here’s why:

  • Support and Alignment: Custom orthotics help support and align the feet and ankles properly.
  • Pain Relief: They alleviate discomfort caused by foot problems.
  • Healthy Development: Orthotics can help children develop a proper walking or running gait.
  • Prevention: They prevent future complications relating to a host of foot issues.
  • Tailored Solutions: Custom orthotics are specifically designed to address your child’s unique needs.

How do I know if my child needs orthotics?

If you are wondering if your child might need orthotics, look out for these signs:

  • Foot complaints. If your child frequently complains about foot pain, understand that it is a red flag that must be assessed as soon as possible.
  • Difficulty walking. Be aware if your child has trouble walking or running on both or either foot.
  • Visible foot deformities. Look for any visible signs of foot deformities or abnormal walking patterns.

If any of these signs are present, immediately consult a specialist who can professionally evaluate your child’s foot and recommend the right type of orthotic.

At what age should kids get orthotics?

Children can develop foot problems at any age, but when should you consider orthotics? Kids should get orthotics as early as possible to prevent any long-term negative effects.

Many concerns surrounding a child’s walk (flat feet, duck feet, inward-turning feet, walking on tiptoes) usually resolve themselves before the age of three, as the child’s muscles develop and the structures of the feet become fixed. Orthotics are rarely recommended for children before three years old.

But if any of the early signs mentioned above are visible, they will typically be relevant around age five and on, when foot pain and abnormal walking patterns might be more obvious. Addressing these issues with early intervention can prevent them from worsening and support healthy development.

Should kids with flat feet wear orthotics?

If not addressed, flat feet can lead to discomfort in children. Orthotics provide the necessary arch support to alleviate pain associated with flat feet and are custom-tailored to your child’s specific needs, ensuring optimal support and comfort.

Children who experience pain with flatfoot will see a dramatic turnaround after they are treated. With the assistance of orthotics, children’s activity levels often increase because there is no more pain holding them back, and this is always going to be a positive for a parent.

How long do kids’ orthotics last?

The longevity of your child’s orthotics depends on several factors:

  • Growth Rate: Because children grow quickly, orthotics may need to be replaced every six months to a year.
  • Activity Level: Just as active children wear out shoes more quickly, they will also wear out orthotics faster.

Regular check-ups with their specialist must be prioritized in order to ensure the orthotics continue to fit properly and provide the necessary support.

Does insurance cover orthotics for kids?

Insurance coverage for pediatric orthotics varies by provider and policy. Many plans cover orthotics for kids if they are deemed medically necessary. It is essential to check with your insurance provider for specific details. Your healthcare provider can always assist with the necessary documentation to support your claim and get your child the help they need.

If your insurance does not cover the prescribed orthotics, the out-of-pocket cost can be up to $500. Off-the-shelf inserts that can be modified to fit the foot typically cost between $60 to $300.
