What is a mastectomy bra?

Mastectomy bras are specially designed bras for women who have undergone a breast removal operation of one or both breasts, most commonly as a treatment for breast cancer. They are designed for aesthetic, support, and comfort post-surgery.

They come in many styles, including bras, sports bras, sleep bras, swimwear, and lingerie.

What types of breast prostheses are there?

There are many options for mastectomy bra designs, sizes, shapes, and skin colors.

The two major types of breast prostheses are:

Partial Breast Prosthesis

Normally used for post-surgical treatment for lumpectomy or quadrantectomy (segmental mastectomy), which is tuckable into a regular or mastectomy bra.

Attachable Breast Prosthesis (contact prosthesis)

It is attached via Velcro tabs or adhesive strips directly on your body. It can be worn with regular bras and can accommodate partial or full breast sizes and shapes. This is a common alternative to mastectomy bras.

How to choose the best mastectomy bra?

There are various styles of mastectomy bras available, depending on your particular needs.

External Silicone Breast Prosthesis

Silicone breast prosthetics are more like real breasts than non-silicone options. They weigh and drape similarly to breast tissue, have movement, are customizable to match your body and bear a heavy presence, especially when exercising.

Non-Silicone Breast Prosthesis

Non-silicone breast prosthetics weigh less and drape differently than natural breasts but can be worn immediately after a mastectomy and are less expensive than silicone options.

Post-Surgical Soft Form in Camisole

Post-surgical camisoles help hold your prosthesis and drainage bulbs post-surgery, making your recovery more comfortable and secure.

Post-Mastectomy Bra

Post-mastectomy bras come in various styles and tones, allowing you to attach your prostheses while preserving comfort and supporting your healing (preventing rubbing).

How soon after a mastectomy can I get a breast prosthesis?

You’re typically ready for a permanent breast prosthesis about six weeks after your mastectomy, once you’ve fully healed and have finished any necessary radiotherapy.

You’re typically ready for a permanent breast prosthesis about six weeks after your mastectomy, once you’ve fully healed and have finished any necessary radiotherapy.

What is the best bra after mastectomy?

It’s recommended that you wear soft, front-closing athletic bras and avoid underwire bras for months after your reconstruction surgery.

Do mastectomy bras stay in place?

Mastectomy bras are similar to normal bras but have inner stretchable pockets that keep your prosthesis in place.

Where and how do I get fitted for a prosthesis or post-mastectomy bra?

Prosthesis or mastectomy bra fitting typically occurs in your local hospital or a specialized prosthetic service provider by a breast care nurse or trained prosthesis fitter.

How do you find a bra with a mastectomy?

A local certified prosthesis provider will be able to measure you and provide you with everything you need for post-mastectomy prosthesis treatments, including a post-mastectomy bra and attachable prosthetic breasts.

How long do prosthetic breasts last?
