Suspension System for Prosthetic Limbs

As prosthetic technology advances, so are the capabilities and functional restoration of those who’ve lost a limb that would have otherwise been limited by their loss.

The suspension technology is how the prosthesis socket is held to the residual (remaining) limb – essentially where the prosthetic and natural body meet.

Pin Lock Suspension

For cylindrical residual limbs, pin lock suspension works well, providing a pin at the end of a silicone or gel-lined liner, allowing you to lock into your prosthetic, which can later be removed by pressing a release button.

Sleeve Suspension

Sleeve suspension systems utilize a gel-like tubing that rolls over the affected limb and socket, creating a seal that suspends the prosthesis. The lifespan of sleeve suspensions does vary from person to person, and there is the risk of hole punctures in the sleeve, potentially resulting in pain, discomfort, and suspension issues.

Suction

A sealing sleeve is attached to the affected limb and the socket. When the prosthesis is attached, the suction valve expels the air from inside the socket. This creates negative pressure inside the socket. A release button can be pressed to break the seal and release the tension, allowing the user to remove the prosthesis and socket.

Symptoms of Poor-Fitted Prosthetic Sockets
