Prosthetics for Specialized Activities and Sports

February 1, 2024

Recreational sports are a delightful way to boost overall health and wellbeing, yet an amputation can present serious obstacles to engaging in such activities. However, at Pongratz, we team up with the leading-edge prosthetic designers so we can stay at the forefront of technology that gives amputees the ability to explore additional recreational resources.

There are a variety of prosthetic options depending on your particular amputation and your preferred activities. After amputation surgery, the body initially weakens, but with time and proper care, you’ll be able to resume daily activities—and hopefully also your favorite sports—with your prosthesis and rehabilitation.

When getting your first prosthesis, communicate your activity goals to the rehabilitation team, as they will design your prosthesis and rehabilitation plan catered to you. If a specific activity is crucial, you might consider a second prosthesis, although insurance may not cover it. Make sure to discuss your options with your prosthetist for personalized advice.

Recreational Activities

A prosthesis can support your ability to participate in plenty of recreational activities. Some common recreational activities that prosthetics can help with include:

Walking and Hiking: Lower limb prostheses are designed to support walking and hiking, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors.

Running and Jogging: Custom-designed running prostheses enable you to engage in running and jogging activities, making it possible to participate in sports or recreational running events.

Cycling: Prosthetic limbs can be adapted to bicycles so you can enjoy cycling as a form of exercise or recreation.

Swimming: Waterproof prosthetic components are available, allowing you to swim and engage in water-based activities without concerns about damaging your prosthesis.

Golfing: Prostheses can provide stability and support for golf enthusiasts.

Team Sports: Depending on your particular amputation and the sport, you may be able to participate in team sports such as basketball, soccer, or volleyball, with the help of appropriate prosthetic devices.

Rock Climbing: Specialized prostheses with enhanced grip and durability can assist you in participating in rock climbing and similar activities.

Skiing: Prosthetic limbs can be adapted for use with skiing equipment, allowing you to enjoy various forms of skiing, including downhill and cross-country skiing.

Fishing: Prosthetic arms and hands can be designed to assist you in holding and operating fishing equipment.

Dancing: Prosthetic limbs that provide stability and heel height flexibility can support you in engaging in dance and other rhythmic activities.
